  • 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 9 tbsp (126 g) unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 3/4 cup (165 g) brown sugar (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (for caramel sauce)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for caramel sauce)
  • 8 oz (226 g) cream cheese, cold (for frosting)
  • 2 cups (260 g) powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Melt unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown and nutty; set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat the browned butter with granulated and brown sugars until fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time and mix in vanilla.
  5. Gradually alternate mixing in dry ingredients and buttermilk until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For caramel sauce, melt butter in a saucepan, stir in brown sugar, then whisk in heavy cream until bubbling gently.
  8. Beat cold cream cheese with powdered sugar for frosting until smooth.
